Big Changes for SC Boaters: Less Paperwork, Lower Taxes

Owning a boat in South Carolina could soon become cheaper and easier thanks to House Bill H. 3858. This proposed law aims to reduce property taxes on boats and streamline the boat titling process, making ownership more affordable for everyone.

What’s in the Bill?

No More Outboard Motor Titles – Right now, boat owners must title outboard motors separately from their boats, adding extra paperwork. This bill eliminates that step, making buying, selling, and registering boats simpler.

50% Property Tax Exemption – The bill would cut boat property taxes in half by exempting 50% of a boat’s fair market value* This means big savings for boaters each year.

Why Does This Matter?

- Lower Costs – Paying half as much in property taxes means keeping more money in your pocket.
- Less Paperwork – No more extra title requirements for outboard motors.
- Easier Buying & Selling – With fewer hoops to jump through, upgrading or selling a boat becomes more convenient.
